MEALS ON WHEELS

The Bethel United Methodist Church shares the responsibility of delivering meals on wheels to the elderly in Bethel with three other churches in town. They are the First Congregational Church, St. Thomas and St. Mary’s. Each church delivers meals on Monday through Friday during one week of each month. There are two routes in Bethel with ten to fifteen meal recipients on each route. We have a dedicated group of volunteer drivers who deliver faithfully each month. They are:

Mondays Kathy Keith and Kathy Olsen
Tuesdays Fern Blair and Bill Caron
Wednesdays Alice Mayer and Clay Caron
Thursdays Jim Burghoff and Tim Bishop
Fridays Ron and Ellie Maxwell and Win and Paul Brickmeier

In addition, there are four extra days during the year that we deliver. Once each quarter there is a “fifth week” and we provide a driver on the four Wednesdays of the “fifth week”.  They are:

Fifth Week Wednesday  Alice Mayer and Jim Burghoff
Substitutes  Nancy and Bill O'Halloran and Alice Mayer

The prepared meals are picked up at the Senior Center between 10:30 – 11:00 a.m.   It takes about an hour or an hour and a half to deliver the meals.

Note: When I began delivering meals on wheels 20 years ago we had one route and about seven people receiving meals. It was necessary to divide the route to accommodate the approximately 25 people receiving meals today.   The need is great.

Volunteers are always welcome to join our team! If you are available to help weekdays, please call me. You’ll be glad you did. You have the opportunity to help ten to fifteen people in about an hour. How often do you have a chance to do that?
